Baptism is one of the core beliefs of our Christian faith. Keep reading for Baptism activities for Catholic kids to help your students understand both the significance of the sacrament and facts about it.
1 ) God’s Family Tree
Help students make the connection that Baptism brings us into the family of God by relating to their own families. Have children bring in photos (or draw one!) of their own families to share with the class. Consider displaying them around a picture of your church or a baptismal font with the title “Baptism Makes Us Part of God’s Family”.
For younger children, the picture book “On the Day You Were Baptized” is a nice, simple introduction to talking about the sacrament. Find a copy HERE (affiliate link).
2) Read the Scripture of the Baptism of Jesus
Teach students that all the sacraments were given to us by Jesus, as an outward sign of God’s grace. He was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. Read directly from holy scripture the story of Christ’s baptism while students close their eyes and imagine what it would have been like to be there.
3) Get Hands-On!
Give students a visual learning experience by taking them to church and gathering around the baptismal font. Ask your parish priest if he is available to join your class and go through the steps of baptism with them.
An alternative is to role play a baptism in your classroom. Use a large bowl as the baptismal font and consider “baptizing” a baby doll or teddy bear.
Also, perhaps you or a parent is willing to bring in symbols to show the class, for instance, a baptismal candle, white garments, etc.
Do you have a holy water font in your classroom? Consider placing one by the door! Teach students how when we say the Sign of the Cross with holy water, we are renewing the promises made at Baptism.
4) Learn about their own baptisms
Assign students the task of finding out more about their own baptism. Have them interview their parents and write about what they learned.
Encourage them to bring in a picture to share if they have one! Find a printable interview handout in the Baptism Activities Packet HERE.
5) Need low-prep resources that will help you dive deeper into the Sacrament of Baptism with your students?
This Baptism Activities Packet includes posters with facts and the steps of Baptism and a large variety of comprehension activities.
For younger students, check out this Baptism Easy Reader to help introduce the sacrament.
