February brings images of hearts, candy, and cards, but how much do we know about the reason behind this season of friendship and love? Keep reading for 5 ways to celebrate Saint Valentine in the Catholic classroom this year.
Not much is actually known about this saint that lived in the 3rd century A.D., but legends passed down about his bravery in living his Christian faith can inspire us to love like Christ as well. Share what we do know about his story with the ideas below:
1) Read a Book about his Life
Check your school or local library first for a picture book to help students visualize the life of this priest from ancient Rome. If you are looking to add one to your classroom, I like this Holiday Saint Reader and this Saint Valentine book from Amazon (affiliate links).
2) Facts and Reflection Booklet
This printable contains the story of St. Valentine and activities to help children reflect on the virtue of love and also his patronages, such as happy marriages and beekeepers! It’s also a fun project for them to take home to share with their families.
For older students (grades 2nd-5th), this writing unit includes a mini poster with facts about Saint Valentine and a more in-depth writing lesson on how we can embody his virtues in our own lives.
3) Watch a Video
This YouTube video contains facts about the saint as well as a prayer that you can say together. Just for fun, consider having students watch this video as well to test their knowledge with a trivia game!
4) Incorporate the Saint in your Class Party!
Keep the focus on the real St. Valentine during your class celebration of the day. Consider having students write notes of encouragement to each other to pass out along with their traditional cards and treats during your Valentine Exchange.
Looking for party games? Check out this printable bingo game that melds images of both the history of the day and modern celebration.
5) Acts of Love… leading to Lent
Ash Wednesday is very near to Valentine’s Day. Tie the story of Valentine with how we perform acts of love for Christ during the season of Lent, through our actions of prayer, fasting, and alms giving. Consider this Lenten Jar Project for a visual way to encourage students to share the acts of love that they choose to perform during these 40 days.
