Easy May Crowning Ideas for the Classroom

During the month of May, Catholics celebrate the Blessed Mother as the Queen of Heaven. One easy way to bring this celebration to the classroom is by having a May Crowning ceremony with your students.

If your school or church community is not doing a larger service, it is easy to have a simple May Crowning in your own classroom.

Read below for some easy May Crowning ideas and activities to implement this year.

Have students help decorate the room in preparation.

Set the Scene

Use a small table to set a statue of Mary on in the front of the room. Gather a few vases (or ask parents to send them in) for students to have a place to bring flowers. Arrange the classroom desks or tables to make an aisle in the middle of the room leading to the Blessed Mother.

Let students help with preparations, reminding them that they are getting ready to celebrate Mary in a special way as Queen of Heaven. They can color the sheet above (find it HERE) or draw pictures of their own to display during the ceremony.

Make a Simple Schedule

May Crowning does not have to be a complicated event. If you are having a simple one in your classroom, pick out a couple of songs your class can sing in honor of the Blessed Virgin and prayers they can pray together. Consider printing handouts of the words or display them, so students can follow along and participate well.

An example could be: 1) Sing a hymn as children process down the aisle, placing their flowers in the vases. Have the last student or teacher place a small crown on Mary’s head. 2) Pray the Hail Mary together. 3) Sing another hymn and pray the Memorare.

Plan for Flowers

Again, keep it simple. Ask students to bring flowers from their homes or pick a wildflower on the way to school. Encourage them to bring extra to share with their classmates who may not have access to any.

You can also have children create paper flowers out of tissue paper and pipe cleaners or construction paper for a fun art project in the days before May Crowning.

Follow Up Activity

Download this printable booklet for students to write and draw about May Crowning. This can also be printed and distributed before the ceremony to let students have a copy of the Hail Mary and Memorare to pray together.
